Eating After a Penghu Ride: Beef Offal Soup From 05:40
Riding in Penghu follows a different rhythm from the main island. Summer sun is fierce and the winter monsoon is unrelenting, so most people compress riding into dawn and dusk and retreat to town at midday. That shifts mealtimes with it: what you need is breakfast that is already open at 05:00 and a proper dinner still serving when you get back in the evening — not the tourist restaurant that peaks at noon. When you ride in Penghu decides when you can eat
Two things compress the riding window in Penghu: summer sun and winter monsoon. At midday in summer the Great Bridge section offers almost no shade, and in winter the north-easterly turns headwind sections into hard labour. The result is that most itineraries run dawn-to-late-morning, with a second leg at dusk.
That means your first meal falls between 05:00 and 07:00, when most tourist-facing places have not opened. Conversely, by the time the popular seafood restaurant fills up at noon, you are usually back at the hotel avoiding the heat.
So the selection here works in that order: find what opens early enough, then what is still open at dusk, and only then consider how good it is.
The three places and their real hours
Ratings and review counts are a Google Maps snapshot from 8 August 2026 and will change. All three are in central Magong, within easy reach of each other. Expect cash only and no English menu; seafood prices at market-style places are often by weight plus a cooking charge, so confirm before ordering.
- Beixinqiao Beef Offal Soup (Magong): open 05:40–11:30, seven days a week. Google rating 4.3 from 3,772 reviews, under NT$200 per person. Opening at 05:40 makes it the earliest place in this entire series, matching the Penghu dawn start exactly. It shuts at 11:30, so treat it as breakfast, not lunch, and do not schedule it for midday.
- Fu Oyster House (Magong, near Guanyin Pavilion): open 11:00–14:30 and 17:00–21:00, seven days a week. Rating 4.2 from 2,757 reviews, NT$200–400 per person. Saturday peaks are 88% at 18:00 and 86% at 19:00. Finishing an evening ride and heading back into town lines up neatly with the dinner service, but avoid the 18:00–19:00 crush or book ahead.
- Yijia Cactus Ice (Magong): open 08:30–18:00, seven days a week. Rating 3.9 from 2,256 reviews — slightly below this series’ primary threshold, shown as found. Its value is that it does not close in between: during the dead hours from the end of the morning ride to the evening start, it is one of the few places still open. Cactus ice is Penghu’s signature dessert, and cold food genuinely helps after a summer ride.
Fitting all three into one day
Following the usual two-leg Penghu pattern, a day can run like this: eat beef offal soup at Beixinqiao between 05:40 and 06:00, roll out at 06:30, and finish the morning leg before the sun gets serious. Get back to Magong before 11:00 and the soup shop is still open, so a second bowl is possible.
Midday to late afternoon is the rest window. Yijia Cactus Ice runs 08:30 to 18:00 without a break and is one of the few reliably open options in that gap.
Head out again at dusk and go straight to Fu Oyster House on the way back. It opens at 17:00 and closes at 21:00, but 18:00 to 19:00 is the peak — for a group, book ahead or push the meal to after 19:30.
Buy souvenirs such as brown sugar cake the day before you fly home. Shelf life at room temperature is generally only about three days, so buying early means it spoils in your luggage.
What a support vehicle does on an offshore island
Penghu is an offshore island, and resupply is thinner than on the main island — noticeably so on the Baisha and Xiyu sections west of the Great Bridge. A support vehicle handles three things here.
First, water and sun protection. There is no shade on the summer sections, and carrying cold water and spare sunscreen in the vehicle is more reliable than hunting for a convenience store en route.
Second, retreat on monsoon days. When the winter north-easterly is strong, a headwind section can make the planned route simply unworkable; with a vehicle alongside, riders can be collected and returned to town rather than grinding it out.
Third, joining up mealtimes. The shops are concentrated in central Magong while riding routes often stretch to Baisha or Xiyu. Covering that gap under your own power eats the time you were going to spend eating.
A restaurant stop is not a standard inclusion but can be requested while planning. Whether bikes and luggage travel with you by ferry is a separate question, governed by each operator’s vehicle-shipping rules.
Vegetarian, halal and other dietary limits
Penghu food is built on seafood, so dietary restrictions need planning well in advance.
Vegetarian: Beixinqiao and Fu Oyster House are both meat- and seafood-centred, and Google Maps does not record their vegetarian provision. Yijia Cactus Ice serves ice desserts containing no meat and is the least restrictive of the three. Central Magong has vegetarian buffets, which are worth arranging separately.
Halal: none of the three holds halal certification, and seafood handling here has no relationship to halal requirements. For travellers who need halal food, the practical approach in Penghu is packaged food, bought in sufficient quantity on the main island before departure.
Allergens: shellfish is the core of Penghu cooking. Oysters, prawns, crab and small squid are handled in shared cookware at most places, so cross-contamination is hard to avoid. If you have a seafood allergy, treat the island as high risk.
