Five Days Cycling from Taichung|Sun Moon Lake, Shuili & Sanyi

Sometimes, having no destination is a destination in itself. This group of riders from Hong Kong spent five days in Taiwan, making Taichung their home base instead of rushing around the island or changing hotels every night.

Making Taichung the center of the trip

Each morning, they rolled out toward Sun Moon Lake, Shuili or the hill town of Sanyi. Lakes, mountain roads and small towns revealed a different side of Taiwan each day.

Head east into the mountains, south toward Sun Moon Lake and Shuili, or north to Sanyi. Choose one route in the morning and return to the same city by evening. Without moving bags, changing hotels or rushing past the view.

Daytime routes stay on Strava

Once the bikes were put away and everyone had showered, it was time to earn back the day's calories with Japanese food. The daytime routes stayed on Strava; the nighttime itinerary stayed in the riders' group chat.

Some sides of Taichung are best seen from a bike. Others only appear after dark.

Back in Hong Kong, the group chat stayed busy

Five days later, everyone returned to Hong Kong with their bikes and luggage, but the group chat did not go quiet. Some still talked about Sun Moon Lake or Sanyi; others only remembered the Japanese food in Taichung.

When someone asked where they went after dinner, everyone suddenly agreed: “Taichung nights are not meant to be explained in writing.”

In the end, only one important question remained: “When are we going again?”

The best destination may not be on the map

Sun Moon Lake, Shuili and Sanyi are points on a map. What they truly remembered was setting out together, sweating together and making it safely back to Taichung each day.

They rode for the scenery by day and came home with stories from the night. Sometimes the most unforgettable destination is the one that never appears on the map.
