# Penghu Islands Cycling｜Cross-Sea Bridge & Season

Beyond Taiwan's main island, the Penghu archipelago is one of the most distinctive cycling destinations around. Turquoise water, coral-stone villages, and a cross-sea bridge make for scenery unlike anywhere on the mainland. But Penghu's geography is really two things at once, a bridge-connected island cluster and a scattering of outer islands, and that changes how you plan a trip. Which parts you can ride to directly, when to go, and how to get yourself and your bike there and around. This guide pulls together what the Penghu County Government, the Directorate General of Highways, and the Tourism Administration have published, covering the bridge-connected riding area, getting your bike to and around the islands, choosing a season, practical riding notes, and where a support vehicle fits in.

## The Bridge-Connected Riding Area and the Island-Hopping Geography

Under the current official count from a Penghu County Government re-survey completed in 2005, the archipelago has 90 islands, only 19 of them inhabited, with a total land area of about 127.9636 km² and roughly 320 km of coastline. The islands are divided into six administrative districts. Magong City, Huxi Township, Baisha Township, Xiyu Township, Wang'an Township, and Qimei Township.

What matters most for a cyclist is this. The Magong main island (including Huxi Township), Baisha Township, and Xiyu Township are linked into one continuous land route by bridges. Baisha Township's own official introduction states that Baisha connects to Huxi and Magong via the Zhongzheng Bridge on its southeast side, and to Xiyu via the Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge on its west side. In other words, these four districts can be ridden end to end without ever needing a boat. Wang'an, Qimei, and the Southern Four Islands (Dongji, Xiji, Dongyuping, and Xiyuping) are a different matter. None of them are connected to the Magong main island by road, so getting there means taking a boat.

## Getting Your Bike to Penghu by Air or by Ferry

There are two official ways to get a bike to Penghu. The first is flying into Magong Airport (IATA code MZG) on a domestic flight, most airports on Taiwan's main island have domestic routes there. With bicycle check-in handled the same way as the general domestic-flight rules at any airport on the main island. The second is the passenger ferry between Kaohsiung and Magong, currently operated by Penghu Ferry (the previous operator, Taihua Ferry, retired from the route in August 2023 and was replaced by Penghu Ferry).

Penghu Ferry's official 'vehicle check-in information' page states clearly that bicycles must be disassembled and packed into a bike bag or case, then checked in. They are not accepted as carry-on. A bike that hasn't been disassembled or bagged is instead charged as general freight, and each passenger may book up to 4 vehicles (cars, scooters, and bicycles combined) per sailing. Whether you fly or take the ferry, your bike needs to be checked in ahead of time, it can't be carried straight onto the plane or the ship as hand luggage. And you should check the airline's or Penghu Ferry's official site on the day for current fares, schedules, and check-in fees.

## Getting Around Inside and Beyond the Bridge-Connected Cluster

Within the bridge-connected cluster. The Magong main island, Huxi, Baisha, and Xiyu. You can ride the whole way by bike. Going further, to Wang'an, Qimei, or the Southern Four Islands, the public ferry between Magong and Wang'an/Qimei is operated by the Penghu County Government's Public Vehicle and Vessel Administration, mainly serving local commuters and visitors while also carrying cargo; the Southern Four Islands are mostly reached on private speedboats based out of the South Sea Visitor Center, whose public information tends to focus on package tours.

Our research turned up no official or publicly posted policy. From either the public ferry operator or the private speedboat operators. On whether bicycles can be checked onto these inter-island boats. Several tour operators' listings also show that getting around on Wang'an, Qimei, and the Southern Four Islands is mostly done by rented scooter or guided tour bus. If your itinerary depends on bringing a bike onto an inter-island sailing, confirm directly with the boat operator beforehand rather than assuming either way.

## Summer Is for Riding, the Winter Monsoon Is Not

Summer, April through September, is the season for riding in Penghu. According to statistics published on the Penghu County Government's official 'monsoon' page, during the northeast monsoon period from October through the following March, wind speeds exceeding 10 m/s (roughly a level-6 wind) occur 56% of the time, far higher than summer's 7.5%. When a strong continental cold air mass moves in, gusts can reach level 12 or above. The county government also notes that both activity levels and tourist visits drop noticeably in winter, making it the traditional off-season. Nationally, typhoon season runs June through November per the Central Weather Administration, overlapping the monsoon period slightly in October and November.

Beyond the climate, summer is also the season Penghu officially promotes for tourism. As an example, the 2026 Penghu International Ocean Fireworks Festival held test launches on April 20 and 27, with the main event running from its May 4 opening through an August 25 closing, plus extra shows in Wang'an, Qimei, Jibei, Huxi, Xiyu, and Baisha. The festival's dates shift every year, so check the current year's announcement from the Penghu County Government or the Tourism Administration before you go. This event schedule is only offered as evidence that summer is the officially promoted high season, not as climate data.

## Bridge Crosswinds, Sparse Outer-Island Supplies, and Sun Protection

Our research found no dedicated wind-related restriction or dismount policy from the road authorities specifically for cycling across the Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge. What is verifiable officially is that the Houmen Channel the bridge spans has notably strong currents, with sea conditions worsening further in winter, and that the corrosion from year-round northeast monsoon winds has been one of the factors behind the bridge's past reconstructions. Combined with the wind statistics in the previous section, it's worth watching for crosswinds when crossing the bridge, and especially worth avoiding the northeast monsoon season altogether.

Population and shop density on the outer islands, Wang'an, Qimei, and the Southern Four Islands. Are far lower than on the Magong main island, so it's worth planning your supplies ahead rather than assuming you can restock along the way. Penghu has an island climate with little mountain cover anywhere, and long hours of sun exposure, so sun protection and hydration are details worth paying extra attention to when riding here.

## Where a Support Vehicle Fits Into a Penghu Island-Hopping Trip

An island-hopping trip in Penghu spans multiple islands, faces strong northeast monsoon winds in winter, and has to work around relatively sparse supply points on the outer islands. Together, these make a support vehicle's role on a Penghu trip even more valuable than on a mainland-Taiwan trip. Carrying luggage, pulling over for strong-wind conditions, and bridging supply gaps all take pressure off the ride. That said, a support vehicle can't follow you onto an inter-island boat. It can only provide support within the bridge-connected cluster of the Magong main island, Huxi, Baisha, and Xiyu, while transport and sailing arrangements for the outer-island legs, Wang'an, Qimei, the Southern Four Islands. Need to be confirmed separately.
